Bereavement counselling is a type of therapy designed to help people cope with the emotional, psychological, and sometimes physical effects of losing a loved one. It provides support for those who are grieving, helping them process their loss and find ways to adjust to life without the person who has died.

Help process grief Allowing the person to express their feelings of sadness, anger, guilt, confusion, or numbness.

Understand grief Exploring the unique ways people grieve and how it affects thoughts, behaviour, and physical health.

Develop coping strategies Learning tools to manage intense emotions and handle day-to-day life after a loss.

Work through complex issues Addressing unresolved conflicts or difficult relationships with the deceased, traumatic deaths, or multiple losses.

Who Might Benefit?
• Anyone struggling to cope after a death.
• People who feel “stuck” in their grief or overwhelmed by it.
• Those experiencing complicated grief, where the pain of loss is prolonged or severely impacts functioning.
• Children, teens, or adults who need a safe space to talk about death and loss.

What Happens in a Session?
• Talking openly about the loss and the relationship with the deceased
• Exploring memories, feelings, and how the death is affecting daily life.
• Learning about the grieving process and what’s normal versus concerning.
• Setting personal goals for healing and adjustment.

When to Seek Help
Grief is natural, but it may be time to consider bereavement counselling if:
• You’re struggling to function at work or in daily life.
• You feel hopeless or numb for an extended period.
• You avoid reminders of the loss to the point it interferes with life.
• You experience intense anger, guilt, or depression that doesn’t ease over time.

Please rest assured that we all need someone to talk to at difficult times in life. I have had bereavement counselling myself and it really does help. You cannot make the grief go away but by talking things through, you can process your feelings in a safe way.
