FAQ

What is counselling? Counselling is really helpful when you are going through times of stress. It is useful to talk to someone impartial who will not give advice but will help you to find the right answers for your predicament. Sometimes we have the answers already but exploring with a counsellor can help you feel confident with your decision making.

What is person-centred counselling? This is a type of counselling that is solely focussed on the here and now and where you want to go. This is client lead therapy, you choose what we talk about, you are in charge.

What is CBT/ Can I have CBT? CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) is a tool that I use with certain issues. It is commonly known about as it is what the NHS primarily uses. It focuses on the problem and then changing the behaviours to give you a different outcome.

How many sessions of counselling will I need? I usually work with clients for a minimum of 6 sessions. This will enable us to build a strong therapeutic relationship and for you to feel comfortable talking through your issues. Many people find 6 enough, others need a few more. I review on a regular basis to make sure that the sessions are giving you what you need.

What is the difference between seeing a counsellor and a hypnotherapist? All therapists have one thing in common, they want to help you to feel better. Everyone uses different techniques to help you get there depending on what you require. No therapist should guarantee that they can help you, there are no guarantees with any kind of therapy and that includes hypnotherapy. As a counsellor, I use some of the same techniques that some hypnotherapists use.

What is Gestalt therapy? Gestalt is a theory which many counsellors use as part of their “toolbox”. Gestalt focusses on the here and now but can also help the client to resolve past issues. For example, I use the “empty chair” exercise to support people who feel they have things left unsaid that they wish they had said to a deceased loved one. It can be very powerful and help to calm emotions that may be overbearing.

What is Rewind Technique? Rewind is an amazing tool for use with clients who have experienced trauma and are reliving the experience involuntarily. This needs to be explained to you by your therapist prior to undertaking the treatment. It is non invasive and you do not have to speak about the trauma in detail which some people find very hard.
